Church History
Bethel Temple Faith Church began with a vision and purpose ordained from God. The history of Bethel Temple Faith is nothing less of a testament to the faithfulness and provision of God. Bethel Temple Faith Church’s documented story begins with a letter from Apostle Earl C. Hinton, founder, and leader of the Gethsemane Family of Churches, on August 7, 2005. He wrote to Pastor Hinton, saying, “God has chosen you to be an ambassador for Him, and when God chooses us He chooses us and uses us connected to the experiences we have. Even with the disciples, fishers of men…they were fishermen. I heard the Lord tell me this one word for you, concert.” This word was just one of the many signs God would show Pastor Hinton concerning the establishment of his church in the city of Concord, North Carolina.
In December 2008, Pastor Hinton, an Elder at Full Gospel Deliverance Church of God, and First Lady Nickie Hinton visited Apostle at Bethel Temple Church. There Apostle spoke over Pastor's life again that he would be a leader and sent to a foreign place to do the work of God. "The Lord is going to allow you to pastor His people. You are going to be a prominent leader when Jesus comes back. You will be sent to foreign soil. I see the state of North Carolina." This prophetic word was not surprising. Cities like Elizabeth City, North Carolina, were a 45-minute drive from Portsmouth, VA, where the Pastor used to reside, so moving there did not seem out of reach. For a couple of years, Pastor and First Lady Nickie sat on that Word but knew their time was coming to make a transition. In 2011 they left Full Gospel Deliverance Church of God and joined Bethel Temple Church in Portsmouth, Virginia, under Apostle Hinton. Under Apostle Earl C. Hinton's leadership, Pastor Hinton served as an Elder in the Church and an armorbearer of the Apostle. Serving in these roles allowed Pastor Hinton to see a glimpse of his future. Attending Annual Pastors Retreats and meetings with the Gethsemane Family of Church (GFOC) pastors with Apostle primed Pastor Hinton to lead his own church.
Over the next few years, Pastor Hinton began making preparations for pastoring a new church. Not only were preparations being made, but signs pointing towards Concord were becoming more frequent and prominent. In summer 2013, Pastor Hinton visited the North Carolina area and received confirmation through Apostle Hinton’s vision. The recurring presence of “Concord” was intentional from God. It caused Pastor Hinton to begin thinking of names that would pay homage to Apostle Hinton’s legacy and the church that provided opportunities for him to grow spiritually. On August 21, 2013, God deposited the church's name in Pastor Hinton's spirit during a Wednesday night Bible Study.
The year 2014 was a year of confirmations and signs. On April 14, 2014, Apostle Hinton declared at a meeting of the GFOC pastors that Pastor (Elder at the time) would be starting a church out of town. In 2014, Pastor Hinton spoke to God, “Lord, whatever the twelfth state of the union is where I'm supposed to go, and if it is NC, that's where I am supposed to be.” The twelfth state of the union was North Carolina, with the twelfth largest city being Concord, NC. Even down to minor details of weekly date nights for Pastor and First Lady showed signs that Concord, North Carolina, was the place to be. They watched the movie “When the Game Stands Tall,” based on a high school from a city named Concord. God continued to show signs and confirmations through people that settled the idea in Pastor Hinton's heart that Concord, North Carolina, would be the place of his church.
While this was an exciting time, there were still tests of Pastor and First Lady's faith. They both were employed and well established in their careers. Leaving everything behind and moving to a “foreign” city was one of the most significant tests of faith they had faced. But God was with them through it all. When leaving their jobs, God showed favor on Pastor and First Lady by increasing their portion. They received over $30K in bonuses before walking away from everything to pursue the will of God, and God showed provision by allowing unexpected blessings to come from different avenues.
August 2014, Bethel Temple Faith Church found its temporary home at Concord High School. Elder Black (Minister Black at the time) arranged for Pastor to meet the school principal. Once again, God showed favor over the establishment of Bethel Temple Faith Church through Principal Carla Bridges. She said, “it must be the Lord because my pastor asked to rent out my auditorium, and I said no because it’s meant for someone else.” The Black family wasn’t the only connection to Concord High School. Barry Lipscomb worked at Concord High School as a coach, and his affiliation later led his wife, Minister Natasha Lipscomb, and his family to join the Bethel family. From the initial moments of saying yes to housing Bethel Temple Faith Church at Concord High School to holding its first Bible Study on August 5, 2015, Pastor and First Lady Hinton continued to say yes to God’s will.
BTFC had Wednesday night Bible Studies at the Piedmont Renaissance Center, where the owners, Sam and Carol Salome, gave the infant Church a chance to grow. Bible studies are a staple in the culture of Bethel Temple Faith Church. The first bible study consisted of the Black Family and Deaconess Bauknight. Deaconess Bauknight knew Pastor Hinton’s cousin and went to visit on a whim. After the service, she said, “I don’t know what it is about you, but I’m coming back.” This kind of testimony where God used Pastor Hinton to change people’s lives became integral as the church began to grow. After the Black, Graham, and Bauknight families joined, the church’s humble beginnings and life-changing services became known through word of mouth. Evangelist Graham led praise and worship with steadfast commitment, traveling from Fayetteville, North Carolina, each weekend. Membership grew over time, with the Fosters being among the first families to join after the launch service.
On November 20, 2017, BTFC found its new home on Moss Plantation Ave. Having 40-45 members on the church roster and paying rent on a 12K+ square feet building did not seem probable or possible. However, God sustained Bethel Temple Faith Church and made provisions for the church and those connected to it. God used various vessels to make things happen, with Bob Burkett being one of many. Mr. Burkett, the owner of the building, gave $30K to build out the church the way Pastor Hinton envisioned it. He agreed that if the church made timely rent payments for three years, he would give $250K to the church to purchase the building.
Throughout Bethel Temple Faith Church's history, the themes of faith and community commitment have kept us grounded and rooted in God. Bethel Temple Faith Church is uncompromising and a church that will push you with love to become what God wants you to be. We are a family that holds each other to the expectation that we will live an upright life. We are not perfect, but we are consistent and push towards perfection. Bethel Temple Faith Church has humble beginnings and is rooted in faith, so we will always commit to being authentic in our praise and give God the glory for His part in our lives. BTFC is the place where “there is a move of God waiting for you!”
